Reminds me of the Scary Story books I read as a kid. This seems like it could be a book cover of one of them.

Those books terrified me as a kid, so I would say this works as a good monster. :)

Dark foreboding monsters who don't really have a body, just black gasses always scare me the most - but this guy seems to be attached at the ground, very cool.
And the colours, light golden and dark black.. nice.
