What kind of wood do you use to paint on?

could you paint on a random door? like one from a habitat for humanity excess things store. i don't remember what they're called... but it could be a fun place to poke at.
This is a maple wood board - you can get them at most art stores.It'd be fun to paint on a door... but I don't have room in my studio =(

I love the way a canvas (of whatever material) looks with just the background. I could paint backgrounds all day.
